South Sea Pearls

South Sea Cultured Pearl

Scientific name Pinctada maxima, silver-lipped oysters or gold-lipped oysters produce the coveted South Sea pearls. The names of each oyster are derived from the color of the shell's interior outer edge. Found along the coast of Australia, Indonesia, and Philippines these beautiful South Sea Pearls are among the most desired out of all pearl jewelry.

Australia began commercial pearl culturing in the mid-1950s, and currently supply about 60% of the world's supply of South Sea pearls. Indonesia focuses primarily on the gold-lipped oyster, and produce more cream and yellow pearls than Australia. Generally, South Sea pearls are the largest cultured pearls on the market.
